A Perfect Double Feature: Ladybird and Booksmart

A Perfect Double Feature: Ladybird and Booksmart

Last night, on a whim, I decided to watch Booksmart. The promise of a funny High school story with a heartwarming message, while I backed up my computer, sounded fun because I was bored. However, I ended up really enjoying the movie and relating with the two best friends trying to make up for their lackluster High school careers with one last night of partying. As the movie ended, I couldn’t help but think back to one of my favorite coming of age movies, Ladybird. It happens to follow a very similar pattern but with two very different tones in the ending. I started thinking that watching these back-to-back would be perfect. They would bring out the best in each other.

Full spoilers for both movies ahead! Although the beauty of these movies is in the journey not the destination please read with caution if you don’t like spoilers.

Kara no Kyoukai: A pause for thought

Kara no Kyoukai: A pause for thought

Kara no Kyoukai has been on my watch list for a very long time. In fact, it’s been on my list ever since I started watching anitubers recommend me hoards of stuff. However, this series with it’s 10 movie run time and hard to find legal streaming has been a back burner for years. That is, until I found it on Amazon Prime’s video service. This summer has been an opportunity to get myself back into anime and manga after a busy year studying and I was yearning for an opportunity to experience an intriguing show but maybe one I knew little about. Kara no Kyoukai is old enough that you will not hear discussion of it unless actively sought out, yet has stood the test of time to be visually appealing and intriguing plot wise. It’s a perfect match for my needs, so please feel free to read through this journey with me.

Unboxing: Doki Doki Crate

20170801_153512-1Well, I’ve been gone for a while… Sorry about that. However, I just received my first ever Doki Doki Crate (not sponsored) and would love to share. Doki Doki Crate is a service that sends you 5-7 kawaii items straight from Japan. It costs $30 a month with free shipping (or a bit cheaper if you subscribe for multiple months / a year). I subscribed for the August 2017: Back to School crate. It’s really cute and sweet, and definitely something I wanted to try out. I’ll be showing all the items I got for August 2017s crate, giving my opinion on them and whether or not the crate is worth it.

Anime Charm Point: The Eccentric Family

I’m not really big on reviews. Anyone can go on MAL and read ten reviews with ten differing opinions just on the first page alone. Instead I like to focus in on what a particular show had that I enjoyed and by sharing this particular thing I hope people who also look for that  thing will be drawn to watch it. From now on when I focus on one two specific things about a series I’ll be calling it a Charm Point.

In this case the Charm Point of The Eccentric Family season 1 (or Uchoten Kazuko) were the character interactions. With a pretty large cast for 13 episode each character brought their own flavor to both the show and each other. I believe that if you can understand the emotions that the characters feel it creates a greater impact than any save the world plot line. So here’s why The Eccentric Family really sold me with it’s colorful cast of interactions that brought out mundane emotions in the most magical of ways.

Anime Opinon: How Toradora! Lost Me.

I liked Toradora. It had moments that made me laugh and hilarious character interactions.. However, there was one flaw that ruined my enjoyment and made it impossible for me to connect to and process the plot and characters.

I went into Toradora thinking I would like. All the characters were quirky, the animation was decent, the ops and eds were nice (albeit the background music was repetitive). But no matter how much I wanted to like it, it kept overwhelming me. Again and again I would feel like an episode, or an arc, would lose me along the way. This has to do with it’s pacing and storytelling (I guess this is what you call directing).

Anime Opinion: Why Zankyou no Terror Failed Me.

{repost from an old blog}

Zankyou no Terror (znt) is an anime I hold in a really weird place in my heart. To say it was a bad anime is wrong, because the fact that I liked the first couple episodes so much that with even with such a god awful ending I still want to like it means something. You can say it’s downfall is due to awful tropes or awful themes but that’s not true. It’s downfall is that it created and promised a new original story that was so different and beautiful and then delivered less the nothing.

Welcome to Bunbon Anime!

Welcome to Bunbon Anime!

Hello friends!

My name is Mint. I’ve been watching anime for the past 5 years, and have since accumulated my fair share of likes, dislikes, and opinions. I’ve been trying to find a platform to share my own ideas and have finally decided on wordpress. I’m brand new to the site so there might be a few hurdles to jump over along the way. However, I’m so excited to finally start anime blogging!

I’m currently in the middle of Toradora! and am looking to pick up a new show in order to kick start this blog. Feel free to suggest what anime or the kind of content (episodic reviews, live blogs, series revies, analysis?) you would like from this blog. I’m going to have all of it eventually, do not worry!

This is my mal: mintbun which may help you get a sense of what kind of stuff I’ve seen (although I’m bad at updating it so it’s probably not a very accurate marker).

Please enjoy and look forward to this blog!
